Keyword Gap Tool
Compare two domains and find keywords a competitor ranks for that you do not.
How the gap is calculated
A keyword gap is what a competitor earns from search that you do not. This compares the two domains in one country and language, and sorts what it finds by search volume, so the biggest opportunities are at the top rather than the ones that happened to come back first.
The two labels are calculated from ranking positions and nothing else. Missing means the competitor ranks and your domain was not found ranking for that keyword. Weaker means both rank and the competitor is at least five positions higher, which is roughly the distance between the top of page one and the bottom of it.
Start with missing keywords that have volume and commercial intent, and check the competitor’s ranking URL before writing anything. It tells you what kind of page Google is currently rewarding for that term.
Common questions
- What does missing actually prove?
- That the provider's ranking data for that country and language has the competitor ranking and does not have your domain. It is not proof your site does not rank anywhere, and the interface says so rather than overstating it.
- Why five positions for weaker?
- A gap of one or two places is inside the range of normal daily movement and personalization. Five is large enough to be a real difference in clicks. The threshold is fixed and stated so you can judge it yourself.
- Can I compare more than two domains?
- Not in the free tool. Two domains answers the common question clearly, and adding more inputs would make the result harder to read rather than more useful.
- Does the order of the domains matter?
- Yes. The first field is the competitor you want to learn from and the second is your own site. Swapping them answers the opposite question.
